We all went through that process of walking into a store and in-front of us is a mountain of different hair dyes, colours and brands.We go with our gut feeling and make a choice where we end up with results that is not very satisfying. Most dyes contain p-phenylenediamine (PPD) which helps the colour to stick to your hair.

1. Permanent hair dyes


These dyes are there forever until your hair grows or you cut it. It will definitely not wash out. They contain:

  • Colourless dye precursors like PPD
  • Oxidising agents like hydrogen peroxide 
  • Ammonia
  • Couplers

How do permanent hair dyes work?

This dye typically removes your natural colour and replaces it with a new colour.

 

Peroxide bleaches your natural hair and through oxidation and the PPD your hair will be coloured on a molecular level.

How effective are permanent hair dyes?

It is 100% permanent and will never wash off. Even  the most resilient grey hair will be coloured. However this could look unnatural sometimes if not done correctly or there is no attention to detail.

2. Demi-permanent dyes


These are less harse on your hair due to a weaker chemical composition. They have a lower hydrogen peroxide concentration, they contain zero ammonia and they penetrate the hair cortex.

 

How effective are demi-permanent hair dyes?

These hair dyes are less permanent and they to not bleach your hair. You can only go for a similar or darker look. It will wash out in about 30 washes.

Are demi-permanent hair dyes better than permanent hair dyes?

Demi-permanent hair dyes are not damaging your hair as much as permanent hair dyes. Demi-permanent gives a more natural look is is more suitable if you have 45% grey hair.

3. Semi permanent dyes


 

These dyes are free from peroxide and amonium.

Synthetic semi-permanent dyes are pre-formed dyes that contain nitro amines or nitro benzenes. 

Amongst natural semi-permanent hair dyes, Henna  is the most preferred.

How effective are semi-permanent hair dyes?

Can only darken up to 25% grey. They can not lighten your hair only darken. But these dyes are excellent for weak fragile hair as they are light on chemicals.These dyes wash out in about 10 washes.

These dyes normally do not give allergic reactions as they do not contain PPD.

4. Temporary hair dyes (ideally called hair colors)


These dyes do not penetrate the hair and can be washed of  with a single shampooing.

They are great to be used by children that wants to have a fun look for partys or other social occasions.
